Taking on Volunteer Roles After you Retire (CS #75)

Description of session:  The presenters will offer examples of two different ways of bringing your talents into the non-profit world, with climate change as the common thread.

Grady McGonagill, who has a doctorate from Harvard University and recently retired from a 30-year practice as a leadership consultant and coach, will talk about how he drew upon his consulting career to play a leadership role in the creation of a new national organization—Elders Climate Action (ECA)—and the founding and leadership of the first state chapter.

Dave Damm-Luhr graduated from MIT with a Ph.D. in Transportation (Civil Engineering + Urban Studies and Planning) and retired in 2015 from a career helping leaders and organizations be more effective.  He will talk about his co-creation of ClimateX, an online MIT platform for learning, connecting, and collaborating for action on climate issues. ClimateX was the prototype resulting in MIT’s recently announced portal to the world on climate.

The examples illustrate contributions made by people—like Grady and Dave--who have retired, so the session will speak most directly to alumni at or near that life stage. But such initiatives could be undertaken by (energetic!) people still working full time.
