From the President...

Dear Fellow Alumni,

Thank you for making this one of the most successful years for the MIT Sloan Boston Alumni Association.  In 2017, we grew the number of events we hosted by 30% and we also successfully launched our interest groups in Entrepreneurship, Women’s Networking, and Life Sciences.  This was made possible by our dedicated board members and alumni volunteers that helped us execute these outstanding events.  Those volunteers plus our excellent Program Manager, Tina Kruczynski, are essential to helping us make a positive impact on our over 2,000 local alumni each year.

We had two key initiatives going into this year that we were striving to achieve.  One of those was to strengthen our Board.  And we have done that by welcoming three new board members this year - Mark Crowley, MBA ’98, Christina Qi, SB ’13, and Kara Tierney Kelley, MBA ’18.  Plus, we elected Dave Harelick MBA ’02 as our Secretary. With these new additions on the board and the closer ties with students, we will better serve the entire alumni community in 2018.  Please reach out to our board members or myself ( with ideas on how to shape our future together.

The second initiative was to launch key interest groups this year.  In Entrepreneurship, we held networking events, a Start-up Law Panel, and are starting a Founder’s Therapy Roundtable discussion in January.  This continues the great work we have done over the last 3 years in connecting entrepreneurs across MIT Sloan.  We also had a very successful kick-off of the Life Sciences interest group, bringing together 40 people to share ideas, and network this Fall.  And we will continue to host Life Sciences networking opportunities through new events in 2018.  Finally, we have been active in connecting women from several alumni groups to work together across MIT on initiatives to support the growth of women in building their professional network and advancement.  We are launching the first Wine and Women Wednesdays on January 3rd at 6pm at the Avery Bar, Ritz Carlton in Boston. Join us to kick start 2018 in style.

In 2017, we had ~2,800 attendees at our 41 events that were held at MIT or in the Boston area:

  • At the 15th Annual CFO Summit, held in November, 600 corporate finance professionals heard from the CFOs of Hubspot, Applause, JetBlue, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, among others.
  • At the 14th Annual CIO Symposium, held in May, 800 IT professionals heard from the CIOs of GE, Aflac, Fannie Mae, along with 17 MIT and Sloan researchers & professors.
  • We held 8 Career Series events this year. October saw the 60th event in the series which has served over 1,000 alumni.
  • Hundreds of MIT Sloan alumni attended 23 networking and social events this year including trips to the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, Boston Pops, Boston Harbor Service Day, AdMIT Receptions, and Cross Business School Receptions.
  • Our annual Holiday Party (5th year) at the Ritz-Carlton attracted over 300 revelers.

Because of the continued success of our major events, we are proud to be able to offer membership to New England alums at no cost!

We wish you all a happy and successful 2018!

Best regards,

Jeff Uller, MBA ‘03
