From the President...

Dear Fellow Alumni,

The MIT Sloan Boston Alumni Association has had a very successful year running many programs and developing new events to serve our broad alumni community.  We are over 2,000 alumni strong in the local Boston area.  And your membership to be part of all this is free – you earned it with your degree!

As I reflect on the past year and look forward to the future, I envision moving towards a model where it is not just my fellow board members and myself driving the content and the events.  We would like to spark more passion from you – the very dynamic local Boston community.  And one way we can do this is to inspire you to help us make your interest areas something that you can act on through our organization.  Whether you are interested in a certain industry like healthcare or technology; or you have a passion for building better organizations – whatever the topic, these interests are likely shared by many others in our community.  We can build our ties in the Boston area if we connect with each other and develop events, programs, and interest groups that people are excited to join.  My hope is that we are helpful in enabling that spirit in the coming years through connecting and supporting our alumni.  Please reach out to me or anyone on the Board to start or join an “Interest Group” today.

2016 was a successful year for the MIT Sloan Boston Alumni Association, the hometown club of MIT Sloan! We welcomed over 2,600 attendees to 32 events that were held at MIT or the Boston area:

  • At the 14th Annual CFO Summit, held in November, 600 corporate finance professionals heard from the CFOs of GE, UPS, Zillow, RedFin, and TechTarget, among others.
  • At the 13th Annual CIO Symposium, held in May, 800 IT professionals heard from the CIOs of DHL, CVS, Daimler, BNY Melon, along with 19 MIT and Sloan researchers and professors.
  • We held 8 Career Series events this year. November saw the 54th event in the series which has served over 1,000 alums.
  • We introduced a pilot Entrepreneurship Leadership & Mentorship Group which met 6 times over 3 months with 13 attendees.
  • Hundreds of MIT Sloan alumni attended 12 networking events this year including trips to the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, Boston Pops, ICA, Boston Harbor Service Day and AdMIT Receptions.
  • Our annual Holiday Party at the Ritz-Carlton attracted over 300 revelers.

In 2017 you can expect more events like these. We are also launching our “Interest Groups” which we hope will grow over the coming year develop deeper interactions across our alumni base.

Because of the continued success of our major events, we are proud to be able to offer membership to New England alums at no cost - something quite unusual for organizations like ours. All funds we raise are used for the benefit of our members and the community.

In 2016 we welcomed two new Board Members - Julia Abramovich ‘02 and Patricia Hubbell ‘91. We congratulate Ray Chang '84 re-elected as our Treasurer, Craig Newfield ’90 re-elected as our Secretary and Christopher Reichert '04 newly elected as Assistant Treasurer. We would like to thank David Harelick ’02 for continuing to serve the SBAA as a member of the board and President Emeritus, after completing 8 terms as our President.

I thank all of our volunteer leaders for making this club excel.  We are working hard to build upon our past success and look forward to another great year.

Best regards,

Jeff Uller, MBA "03
